PRIVAT LIVEMONT (1861-1936) [BITTER ORIENTAL.] 1897.
41 1/2x31 1/2 inches, 106x80 cm. Goffart, Brussels.
Condition B+ / A-: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Matted and framed.
This is one of Livemont's strongest and most arresting images, and perhaps the only one in which he depicts a raven-haired beauty. In spite of the uncharacteristic use of bold colors and the not-so-delicate ornamentation, from the transparent veils, to the handling of the hair, the image still exudes all of Livemont's style and genius. The woman is holding aloft an orange, which she is squeezing, into a shell, alluding to the orange flavor of this liqueur. This is the proof before letters. Wine Spectator 81, Weill 92.
